Das letzte Over, die letzten Batsmen, der letzte Bowler: 101 Runs haben die Pilgrims schon erzielt, nur noch 2 fehlen zum Sieg. Aber es darf auch kein Wicket mehr fallen. Bianca bowlt, Johann blockt, kein Run. Bianca bowlt erneut, Johann l\u00e4uft, ein Bye, Gleichstand. Bianca bowlt noch einmal, Cam kann den Ball nur mit der Schl\u00e4gerkante in Richtung Slips lenken. Er dreht sich um und schaut dem Ball nach. Die Slips sind m\u00fcde und alt, sie lassen den Ball durchrutschen. Johann l\u00e4uft schon, Cam steht immer noch. Johann ruft, Cam h\u00f6rt nichts. Johann ist schon fast beim gegen\u00fcberliegenden Wicket, nun bemerkt Cam ihn endlich. Johann hat ihn erreicht. Cam mu\u00df jetzt loslaufen!<\/p>\n

Drama, wie es die Pilgrims lieben. Diesmal haben sie es bis ans Ziel geschafft, gerade so eben, mit dem letzten Mann und nur noch 3 B\u00e4llen in Reserve. Dabei hatte es beim Stand von 11 f\u00fcr 4 nach 7 Overs nicht gut f\u00fcr sie ausgesehen \u2013 es sei denn man w\u00e4re Anh\u00e4nger einer Ingolst\u00e4dter Automarke und wollte vier Nullen im Scorebook miteinander verbinden. Doch Cricket ist ja bekanntlich ein Mannschaftssport. Und wer in seiner Mannschaft einen Spieler hat, der in seiner eigenen Liga spielt, hat gute Chancen zu gewinnen. Mit 51* (3×6, 5×4) hatte Cam fast die H\u00e4lfte aller Runs der Pilgrims erzielt; au\u00dferdem war er ihr beste Feldspieler mit zwei sicheren F\u00e4ngen und einem spektakul\u00e4ren Run-Out, ein Direktwurf im rechten Winkel zum Wicket \u2013 von seinem akkuraten Bowling ganz zu schweigen (3-0-14-2).<\/p>\n

Aber es ging ja gar nicht ums Gewinnen beim 6. Alan Jefferys Match im Hamburger Jenischpark am 15.9.2019. Die 20 Cricketer, die sich bei idealem Wetter auf der Wiese unterhalb des Jenischhauses eingefunden hatten, wollten doch genau dasselbe wie die vielen Hunde im Park, sie wollten nur spielen. 11 ehemalige Mitglieder des Alster Cricket Clubs traten unter dem Pseudonym THCC Veterans gegen 8 Pilgrims an, die sich wie schon so oft mit dem vielversprechenden jungen Johann verst\u00e4rkt hatten (6*; man darf wetten, da\u00df er auch noch Pilgrim wird \u2013 er wei\u00df es vermutlich nur noch nicht). Die Helgol\u00e4nder waren vor allem deshalb so dezimiert, weil ehemalige Alster-Mitglieder nicht f\u00fcr ihre Mannschaft antreten durften, und das waren immerhin 7 Spieler. Damit standen insgesamt 15 Pilgrims auf dem Platz (und einer, der es werden sollte). Da war es letztlich auch egal, da\u00df 14 Spieler zugleich dem THCC angeh\u00f6ren \u2013 man war bei der inzwischen traditionsreichen Begegnung sozusagen unter sich.<\/p>\n

Heligoland Pilgrims hatten das Los gewonnen und Kapit\u00e4n Cam hatte sich f\u00fcr das Fielding entschieden \u2013 eine gute Wahl angesichts des zu Beginn noch feuchten und sehr lebhaften Pitches. So konnten sie gleich anfangen, Wickets einzusammeln, die dann auch in regelm\u00e4\u00dfigen Abst\u00e4nden fielen. Nur Mark B. (17) und Trived (12) gelang es, in zweistellige Regionen vorzusto\u00dfen. Erst als die alten M\u00e4nner John (8*) und Andy (23) an den Schlag kamen, legten die Veteranen ordentlich Punkte vor. Andy drosch den Ball gleich zweimal \u00fcber die Feldgrenze und sorgte so f\u00fcr die beiden einzigen Sechsen f\u00fcr Alster\/THCC. Als 100 f\u00fcr 7 erreicht waren, wurde er leichtsinnig und lie\u00df sich sein Wicket per Run-Out von Chris und Moritz nehmen \u2013 erm\u00f6glichte damit aber dem Rest seiner Mannschaft, auch noch zu schlagen. Fast so erfolgreich wie Cam bowlten Chris (3-1-2-1) und Johann (4-0-9-1) sowie Bai (14-1) und Luke (16-1). Adrian fing zwei B\u00e4lle hinter den Stumps und Bai zwei im Feld.<\/p>\n

Im Gegenzug er\u00f6ffneten Alster\/THCC ihr Innings mit ihren st\u00e4rksten Bowlern, Kapit\u00e4n Rick (3-1-13-1), Surya (4-0-7-1), Trived (2-10-4-1) und Mark B. (3-1-15-1); sp\u00e4ter stellten sich Mark R. (3-1-11-1) und Nabeel (4-2-7-0) den Schlagm\u00e4nnern der Helgol\u00e4nder entgegen. Au\u00dfer bei Cam (siehe oben) und dem \u00fcberraschend unersch\u00fctterlichen Chris (14) trafen die Veteranen auf wenig Widerstand. Aus den vier Nullen wurden sogar noch f\u00fcnf (olympische Ringe). J\u00fcrgen (5), allerdings, das sei zu seiner Ehre gesagt, setzte sich ebenfalls zur Wehr und schlug sogar eine fabelhafte Vier in Richtung Third Man. Im Feld hielt G\u00f6tz einen Ball und John gelang sogar ein Fang als Slip mit einer Hand. Dreimal aber schlug Andy zu, zwei F\u00e4nge und ein Stumping gingen auf sein Konto. Nachdem G\u00f6tz (2-0-7-2) im vorletzten Over weitere Wickets beseitigt hatte, bewegte sich das Spiel schlie\u00dflich auf sein dramatisches Ende zu. Ein Wicket noch, und Alster\/THCC h\u00e4tte gewonnen. So mu\u00dften sie sich damit begn\u00fcgen, den Spieler des Tages in ihren Reihen gehabt zu haben \u2013 die Auszeichnung ging verdienterma\u00dfen an Andy, der mit seiner Allround-Vorstellung als Veteran \u00fcberzeugt hatte.<\/p>\n

Nach dem Spiel \u00fcberbrachte Moritz Gr\u00fc\u00dfe von Alan Jefferys, der bedauerlicherweise nicht aus Australien angereist war. Er ist stolz auf die gewachsene Tradition und freut sich, da\u00df in seinem Namen so entspannt und fr\u00f6hlich Cricket im Jenischpark gespielt wird. Das Alan Jefferys Match scheint \u00fcbrigens stilbildend zu wirken \u2013 konnte man doch unterhalb des Spielfeldes auf der Wiese ein zweites Cricketspiel beobachten, zwar ohne ansehnliche Feldmarkierungen, ohne Stumps in Vereinsfarben und auch mit Spielern ohne wei\u00dfe Spielkleidung. Aber hat nicht alles, was w\u00e4chst, einmal klein angefangen? Wer wei\u00df, vielleicht wird aus dem AJM eines Tages noch ein Turnier oder eine ganze Serie \u2013 Spa\u00df genug daf\u00fcr w\u00e4re gewi\u00df vorhanden.<\/p>\n

It is the last over, the last batsmen, the last bowler: The Pilgrims have already reached 101 runs, only 2 to win. But no more wicket may fall. Bianca bowls, Johann blocks, no run. Bianca bowls again, Johann runs, one bye, the scores are tied. Bianca bowls another, Cam can only edge the ball towards the slips. He turns around and looks after the ball. The slips are tired and old, they let the ball slide through. Johann is already running, Cam is still standing. Johann calls, Cam cannot hear. Johann is almost at the opposite crease, when Cam finally notices him. Johann has reached him. Cam has to run now!<\/p>\n

Drama, as the Pilgrims love it. This time they made it to the target, just about, with the last man and only 3 balls to spare. At the score of 11 for 4 after 7 overs it hadn\u2019t looked good for them – unless you were a fan of an Ingolstadt car brand and wanted to connect four zeros in the scorebook. But cricket, as you may know, is a team sport. And if you have a player in your team who plays in a league of his own you have a good chance of winning. With 51* (3×6, 5×4) Cam had scored almost half of all the Pilgrims\u2019 runs; he was also their best fielder with two safe catches and a spectacular run-out, a direct throw at the wicket from a right angle – not to mention his accurate bowling (3-0-14-2).<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

But the 6th Alan Jefferys Match in Hamburg\u2019s Jenischpark on 15.9.2019 was not about winning. The 20 cricketers, who had gathered in ideal weather on the meadow below the Jenischhaus, wanted exactly the same as the many dogs in the park, they just wanted to play. 11 former members of the Alster Cricket Club competed under the pseudonym THCC Veterans against 8 Pilgrims, who, as so often before, had strengthened themselves with the promising young Johann (6*; you can bet he will also become a Pilgrim – he probably just doesn\u2019t know it yet). The Heligolanders were so decimated mainly because former Alster members were not allowed to compete for their team, and that was 7 players after all. So there were a total of 15 Pilgrims on the pitch (and one who would become one). In the end, it didn\u2019t matter that 14 players belong to THCC at the same time – one was, so to speak, stuck with one\u2019s kind in the meanwhile traditional encounter.<\/p>\n

Heligoland Pilgrims had won the toss and Captain Cam had decided to field – a good choice in view of the still damp and very lively pitch at the beginning. So they could immediately start collecting wickets, which then fell at regular intervals. Merely Mark B. (17) and Trived (12) managed to reach double figures. It was only when the old men John (8*) and Andy (23) came in to bat that the Veterans scored well. Andy hit the ball over the boundary twice and thus delivered the only two sixes for Alster\/THCC. When the score had reached 100 for 7, he became careless and had his wicket taken by run-out of Chris and Moritz – but this allowed the rest of his team to bat as well. Almost as successful as Cam with their bowling were Chris (3-1-2-1) and Johann (4-0-9-1) as well as Bai (14-1) and Luke (16-1). Adrian caught two balls behind the stumps and Bai two in the field.<\/p>\n

In return Alster\/THCC opened their innings with their strongest bowlers, Captain Rick (3-1-13-1), Surya (4-0-7-1), Trived (2-10-4-1) and Mark B. (3-1-15-1); later Mark R. (3-1-11-1) and Nabeel (4-2-7-0) were faced by the Heligoland batsmen. Except for Cam (see above) and the surprisingly indestructible Chris (14), the Veterans encountered little resistance. The four zeros even turned into five (Olympic rings). J\u00fcrgen (5), however, to his honour, also fought back and even struck a fabulous four in the direction of Third Man. In the field G\u00f6tz held a ball and John even managed a catch as slip with one hand. But Andy struck three times, two catches and one stumping went on his account. After G\u00f6tz (2-0-7-2) had eliminated more wickets in the penultimate over, the game finally moved towards its dramatic end. One more wicket, and Alster\/THCC would have won. So they had to be content with having the man of the match in their ranks – the award went deservedly to Andy, who had convinced with his all-round performance as a Veteran.<\/p>\n

After the game Moritz delivered greetings from Alan Jefferys, who unfortunately had not travelled from Australia. He is proud of the grown tradition and is happy that Cricket is played in his name in such a relaxed and cheerful manner in the Jenischpark. By the way, the Alan Jefferys Match seems to set a style – you could observe a second cricket match on the meadow below the playing field, albeit without any visible boundary markers, without stumps in club colours and also with players without white clothes. But hasn\u2019t everything that grows once started small? Who knows, maybe one day the AJM will become a tournament or a whole series – fun enough for that would certainly be had.<\/p>\n
