The planning had been severely marred by countless cancellations. College groundsmen had gone on holidays or had never replied to opponents’ enquiries, several pitches were not available for reasons unknown, the tour was crumbling. This meant that after a visit to the Ashmolean Museum or to the Rose & Crown Pub, depending on individual curiosity and ability, the Pilgrims had to crawl from Summertown through Oxford during the afternoon rush-hour on a crowded and very hot bus. But that made the green pasture on just South of to the river Thames even more welcoming. What a marvellously calm late summer afternoon atmosphere outside a clubhouse with a fully stocked bar and a pizza oven, not to mention dedicated players and spectators!Abingdon won the toss and put the Pilgrims in to bat. Captain Nabeel put the Pilgrims President in to open the batting. The Pilgrims President put in every effort not to get out and was thus retired on 3*. So was Cam on 43*, in order to give other batsmen a chance. And so would have been Abhi, had he not got himself caught on 56. This was after 12 overs with a convincing score of 99/3. But then the progress slowed down markedly. AVCC 1st XI captain, Matt, impressed with 2/11, Ankuj also took 2/28, and young captain James bowled the only maiden over of the match in two very tight spells (4-1-13-0). After 12 overs they were only on 56/3, Trived having struck for the first time of his 2/17. This is where Nabeel, in the opinion of some players, could have given the less able bowlers a chance to make the match more exciting. But the captain picked up 1 wicket himself (3-0-9-1) and otherwise stuck with Abhi 1/29 and Sid 2/30, who caught one single-handedly off his own bowling and another spectacularly running backwards off Abhi’s. 2 catches were held by Su behind the stumps.
