Doug, in seinem 22.

On the same day, two men met there for the first time, albeit without knowing of each other. Doug, in his 22nd year for Devon, appeared in a county match on the beautiful Fort Field ground. And 15-year-old Moritz from Hamburg, on holidays in a flat above the adjoining Fort Café, watching his first cricket match, saw the left arm bowler play. 44 years on, Doug, from his regular seat outside the pavilion, witnessed Moritz toiling for the visitors on the same soil. What a shame, neither of them realised they had encountered before. Maybe Doug could have told Moritz how the Pilgrims might beat Sidmouth. Without his advice, they only came second.

Nevertheless, the Pilgrims were delighted to play cricket in sunny Sidmouth. Surrounded by a thatched pavilion to the North, high cliffs to the East and West, and the North Sea to the South, the field certainly has an inimitable flair. Stunned by the scenery and thrilled to compete on the wonderful seaside ground, the Pilgrims fielded first. From the pitch, they could see the tide coming in, just like endless runs of their opponents submerging them, with hardly a chance to break the flood. Pilgrims’ captain Dev gave everyone a chance to bowl, except keeper Adrian who stumped one batsman, but only Nabeel (2), Cam and Dev (1 each) were able to collect wickets. Dev and Mithun took 1 catch each, and Chris impressed with a number of butterfly-attempts to follow suit. With young Will top-scoring 58 in a circumspect manner, 3 batsmen exceeding 40 runs each, and 4 others retired, Sidmouth reached 275/4 off 40 overs easily.

Time for a tea, served in a very traditional way by Lorraine and Rob, whose charming hospitality cannot be praised enough. Alas, neither quiche or sausage rolls, nor chocolate cake or scones could fortify the Pilgrims enough for the opening spell of Odin and Leo, the former taking 2 wickets, as did Riley, the latter keeping the run-rate down efficiently, as did Charles. Cam scored 40, notwithstanding the 2 balls he hit out of bounds against local laws, Satya 31*, Nabeel 25 and Steve 19*, but it was not enough. To the Pilgrims’ credit it has to be noted that all 11 of them stood the whole 40 overs, until reaching 163/8. A small presentation ceremony concluded the encounter.
