Die Wasserschlacht<\/strong><\/p>\n

Es war eine tropfende Angelegenheit, als Heligoland Pilgrims und THCC Barbarians sich am Sonntag, 2. Juli, zum 4. Alan Jefferys Match (AJM) trafen. Wasser tropfte fast \u00fcber das ganze Spiel vom Himmel. Runs tropften langsam von den Schl\u00e4gern beider Mannschaften (mit einem Durchschnitt von 5 Runs pro Over und nur 3 Over, die mehr als 9 Runs lieferten). Der Ball tropfte auf den kn\u00f6chelhohen Rasen und rollte nie mehr als ein paar Meter, egal wie hart er geschlagen wurde. Wasser tropfte vom glitschigen Ball, der kaum gehalten oder gefangen werden konnte. Und nat\u00fcrlich tropfte Erdinger Alkoholfrei (oder enthielt das Bier doch Alkohol?) die Kehlen der Spieler und einiger einsamer Zuschauer hinab.<\/p>\n

Die Kulisse war wie immer wundersch\u00f6n. Senator Jenisch\u2018s majest\u00e4tisches Haus lag an der Nordseite des Felds vor Anker, gro\u00dfe Containerschiffe, kleine F\u00e4hren und der gelegentliche Dreimaster segelten auf dem Flu\u00df an der S\u00fcdseite vorbei und der Aussichtspunkt unter den riesigen Eichen diente den Spielern als Lager, wenn auch mit undichtem Dach. Drei Kisten Bier und ein Scorer-Stuhl mit Tina, die sich drei Stunden gr\u00f6\u00dfte M\u00fche gab, das Scorebuch trocken zu halten, waren unter drei einzelne Sonnenschirme plaziert worden. Ein beinahe ebenes Pitch war fachkundig von Cam angelegt worden, der einen jaulenden Rasenm\u00e4her durch das nasse Gras gezwungen hatte, eingerahmt von Stumps in Helgoland-Farben mit dem Logo des Sponsors. Die Pilgrims waren in ihren adretten Blazern erschienen, die sich abhoben von den unterschiedlich wei\u00dfen Schattierungen der THCC Barbarians.<\/p>\n

Nur Alan Jefferys selbst und das notwendige sonnige Sommerwetter fehlten, letzteres jedenfalls solange das Spiel andauerte. Sobald das Grillen nach dem Spiel begonnen hatte, zogen sich die Wolken zur\u00fcck und die Sonne erschien \u2013 als ob sie den Spielern zu ihrem Einsatz und ihrer Ausdauer applaudieren wollte. Sie alle hatten den nassen Elementen der Wasserschlacht standgehalten, einen harten Wettkampf in gefluteten Schuhen und durchtr\u00e4nkten Hemden ausgefochten und verdienten eine trockene Atempause. Immerhin war es den beiden Mannschaften, kaum beobachtet von einigen vereinzelten Parkbesuchern, im tr\u00fcben Nieseln gelungen, sich bis zum letzten Ball zu messen. Ein dramatischeres Ende eines 25 Over-Spiels h\u00e4tte man sich kaum ausdenken k\u00f6nnen.
\nAufgrund der Beschr\u00e4nkung auf 3 Over pro Spieler f\u00fcr nur 9 Pilgrims auf dem Feld (gegen 10 Barbarians!) mu\u00dfte Wicket-Keeper Daniel seine Handschuhe an Steve weiterreichen, um das letzte Over selbst zu bowlen. Die Barbarians waren schon ein paar Over vorher nerv\u00f6s geworden, als Murali Jasveer clever von Square Leg ausgeworfen hatte. Bei 114 f\u00fcr 5 standen nur noch 4 Wickets und es wurden noch 11 Runs von 12 B\u00e4llen ben\u00f6tigt, um die 124 Punkte der Pilgrims zu schlagen. Den Barbarians gelang es dann im vorletzten Over, den Punktestand auf 122 zu schieben. Auftritt Daniel, der Bowler (noch mit angelegten Keeping-Pads): Khalil kann nicht punkten, Dot-Ball. Zweiter Ball, diesmal schl\u00e4gt Khalil ihn, die Batsmen laufen \u2013 der Ball steigt hoch in Richtung Short Mid-Wicket, dessen H\u00e4nde zuschnappen wie ein Schraubstock. Selten hat ein Pilgrim einen Catch so verdient wie J\u00fcrgen in seine ersten Spiel als Kapit\u00e4n. Jetzt kommt der Augenblick, an dem Barbarians\u2018 Kapit\u00e4n Prasad zur Non-Striker Linie watet. Aswin kann auch nicht punkten, noch ein Dot-Ball: 3 von 3 B\u00e4llen zum Sieg. Dann signalisiert Marvin, der wegen des Regens ohne Brille schiedsrichtert, ein Wide: 2 von 2 B\u00e4llen zum Sieg. Die Batsmen wissen, da\u00df es Zeit ist, etwas zu unternehmen; und als der nasse Ball durch die Handschuhe des Keepers schl\u00fcpft, n\u00f6tigt Prasad Aswin dazu, ein Bye zu laufen \u2013 jetzt ist Gleichstand, 1 von 1 Ball zum Sieg.
\nDaniel bowlt seinen letzten Ball, kein Wide, Aswin sprintet gleich los, Prasad schl\u00e4gt den Ball in Richtung Silly Mid-Off, alle schreien, der Mann ist wirklich n\u00e4rrisch, der Feldspieler wirft den Ball in Richtung Bowler-Stumps \u2013 und vorbei! Mark sichert und wirft den Ball zur\u00fcck, aber Prasad rutscht rein, gerade noch drin (wenn auch nicht trocken) \u2013 die Barbarians haben den Sieges-Run erzielt! Die Pilgrims brechen vor Lachen zusammen, wie albern kann man sein? Das ist klassisches Pilgrims-Cricket. Wo sonst macht es auf und am Feld soviel Spa\u00df?<\/p>\n

Wohlgemerkt, es gab auch einige erw\u00e4hnenswerte, beachtliche sportliche Leistungen: Mohibullah erzielte 44, Cam 30* (einschlie\u00dflich der einzigen 6), Steve 26 (von 25), Murali 19, Chandan 18*, Aswin 16* and Saied 15; J\u00fcrgen erreichte einen neuen H\u00f6chstpunktstand (7*); Bianca blieb so lange am Schlag, da\u00df sie ausgewechselt werden mu\u00dfte; Cam und Murali legten 54 auf, Mohibullah und Saied 51; Catches wurden gehalten von Cam, Murali und J\u00fcrgen; Wickets nahmen Mark, Keith (3-1-4-1), Murali, J\u00fcrgen, Daniel, Jasveer, Saied, Chandan und Kamal (1 je Bowler); und Keith und Cam bowlten jeder ein Maiden-Over. Vorher hatte Alan Jefferys \u201eallen Teilnehmern einen funkelnden Cricket-Tag mit viel Erdinger Bier und einem Spiel in der echten Tradition des Cricketsports<\/em>\u201c gew\u00fcnscht. Alan, gut, da\u00df Du das Wetter nicht erw\u00e4hnt hast \u2013 so konnte Dein Wunsch in Erf\u00fcllung gehen.<\/p>\n

\nThe waterbattle<\/strong><\/p>\n

It was a trickling affair when Heligoland Pilgrims met THCC Barbarians for the 4th Alan Jefferys Match (AJM) on Sunday 2 July. Water trickled from the skies almost throughout the match. Runs trickled slowly from the bats of both teams (with an average of 5 runs per over and only 3 out of 50 overs yielding more than 9 runs). The ball trickled onto the ankle deep lawn and would never roll more than a couple of meters, however hard it was hit. Water trickled off the slippery ball that could hardly be held or caught. And, of course, ERDINGER alcohol-free beer (or did it contain alcohol?) trickled down the throats of players and a couple of forlorn spectators.
\nThe setting was beautiful, as usual: Senator Jenisch\u2019s majestic house anchored on the north of the field, huge containerships, little ferry boats and the odd three-master sailing by on the river in the south, and a vantage point under the huge oak trees doubling as the players\u2019 den, albeit with a leaking roof. Three crates of beer and a scorer\u2019s chair with Tina, trying hard to keep the scorebook dry for three hours, had been tucked under three solitary parasols. An almost even pitch in the centre of the meadow had been expertly laid by Cam forcing a whinging mower through the wet grass, defined by stumps in Heligoland colours bearing the sponsor\u2019s logo. The Pilgrims had arrived in their dapper blazers which stood out against THCC Barbarians\u2019 different shades of white.<\/p>\n

Only Alan Jefferys himself and the necessary sunny summer weather were absent, the latter at least while the game lasted. Once the post-match barbecue had commenced, the clouds receded and the sun came out \u2013 as if to applaud the players on their dedication and stamina. All of them had weathered the wet elements of the waterbattle, fought a tough contest in flooded shoes and soaked shirts and deserved a dry respite. After all, in the gloomy grey drizzle, all but unobserved by some lonely visitors to the park, the two teams had managed to compete until the very last ball. A more dramatic finish to a 25 overs game could hardly have been scripted.
\nWith a restriction of 3 overs per player and only 9 Pilgrims on the field (against 10 Barbarians!), wicket keeper Daniel had to hand over his gloves to Steve in order to bowl the ultimate over. The Barbarians had become nervous already a couple of overs before, when Murali smartly ran out Jasveer from square leg. At 114 for 5 there were only 4 wickets standing and still 11 runs needed off 12 balls to beat the Pilgrims total of 124. The Barbarians then managed to shift their total to 122 in the penultimate over. Enter Daniel the bowler (with keeping pads still on): Khalil cannot score, dot ball. Second ball, this time Khalil hits it, the batsmen run \u2013 the ball goes high towards short mid-wicket whose hands clasp like a vice. Rarely has a Pilgrim deserved a catch more than J\u00fcrgen in his first match as captain. Now it is time for Barbarians\u2019 captain Prasad to wade to the non-striker\u2019s crease. Aswin cannot score either, another dot ball: 3 to win off 3 balls. Then Marvin, who is umpiring without his glasses because of the rain, signals a wide: 2 to win off 2 balls. The batsmen know it is time to do something; so when the wet ball slips through the keeper\u2019s gloves Prasad forces Aswin to run a bye \u2013 scores are level now, 1 to win off 1 ball.
\nDaniel bowls his last ball, it is straight, no wide, Aswin charges immediately, Prasad hits the ball to silly mid-off, everyone shouts, the man is silly indeed, the fielder throws the ball to the bowler\u2019s stumps \u2013 and misses! Mark backs up and returns the ball, but Prasad slithers in, just about home (albeitnot dry) \u2013 the Barbarians have scored the winning run! The Pilgrims collapse with laughter, how silly can you get? This is classic Pilgrims\u2019 cricket. Where else can you have so much fun on and off the field?<\/p>\n

Mind you, there were notable sporting achievements worth mentioning, too: Mohibullah scored 44, Cam 30* (including the one and only 6), Steve 26 (off 25), Murali 19, Chandan 18*, Aswin 16* and Saied 15; J\u00fcrgen got a new batting high-score (7*); Bianca stayed in so long she had to be retired; Cam and Murali put on 54, Mohibullah and Saied 51; catches were held by Cam, Murali and J\u00fcrgen; wickets were taken by Mark, Keith (3-1-4-1), Murali, J\u00fcrgen, Daniel, Jasveer, Saied, Chandan and Kamal (1 per bowler); and Keith and Cam bowled a maiden over each. In advance Alan Jefferys had wished \u201ceveryone attending a scintillating day with plenty of Erdinger beer and a game played in the true tradition of the game of cricket<\/em>\u201d. Alan, it is good you did not mention the weather \u2013 so your wish could come true.<\/p>\n
