Und der Oscar geht an …

Endlich waren die Pilgrims wieder im Erdinger Stadion, direkt neben dem Herbstfest. Volksmusik und der Duft von gerösteten Mandeln und Zuckerwatte wehten über den Platz. Die Sommersonne hatte den nächtlichen Regen aufgesogen; der Rasen war trocken und stumpf geworden. Satya war mit Planken und einem Teppich aus Moosburg angereist und hatte eine Bahn aufgebaut. 11 „Bavarian All Stars“, größtenteils Mitglieder des nahegelegenen BC Attaching, waren spielbereit. Und Frau Bauernfeind von der Nachbarschaftshilfe Erding hatte eine Tonanlage für die Live-Kommentierung der Partie bereitgestellt. Ein idealer Rahmen für den 6. ERDINGER Alkoholfrei Bavaria Cup? Was hätte man sich mehr wünschen können?

Nun, vielleicht eine komplette Elf der Pilgrims, alle Spieler ordentlich in den Vereinskleidung, und vor allem eine etwas engagiertere Leistung der Gäste? Andererseits gab es einige gute Auftritte einzelner Spieler. Die Pilgrims waren gebeten worden, zuerst ins Feld zu gehen. Kapitän Keshav übergab den neuen Ball dem einzigen Neuling in seiner Mannschaft, Matthews Sohn Oscar. Der junge Student aus Berlin enttäuschte nicht: Mit einem Wicket bereits bei seinem allerersten Ball – eine Leistung, die zuvor noch kein Pilgrim vollbracht hatte – setzte er Maßstäbe (4-1-26-1). Ankit ließ sich von dieser Leistung inspirieren und wiederholte sie später (4-1-17-3), hervorragend unterstützt vom geizigen Saradhi (5-0-11-3), der zudem 2 Bälle fing, darunter einen beeindruckenden mit einer Hand im Cover, sowie von Keshav (3-0-12-3), der 1 Ball fing. Ein weiteres Wicket ging auf das Konto von Satya; weitere Bälle wurden von Murali gefangen, der die Pilgrims 2019 auf diesem Platz als Kapitän angeführt hatte, sowie von Jay, der als Ersatzspieler die Mannschaft der Insulaner vervollständigte.

Bei 69/6 sah der Spielstand für die Pilgrims recht gut aus. Nur 2 All Stars hatten es geschafft, zweistellig zu punkten: Kapitän und Eröffnungsschlagmann Rohit (17) sowie Neuzugang Gurjit (22), der den kostbaren rosa Ball sogar unwiederbringlich in eine Dachrinne eines angrenzenden Gebäudes schlug. Doch Ashish S. hatte andere Pläne und zeigte, daß seine kürzliche Verletzung keine Spuren hinterlassen hatte; er erzielte 40 Runs aus 38 Bällen (darunter 3 x 6) und brachte mit wertvoller Unterstützung durch den letzten Mann Nitesh (17 aus 16) den Endstand nach 29,3 Overs auf 146. Würde das auf einem Platz ausreichen, auf dem das hohe Gras das Erzielen von Runs erschwerte?

Das Innings der Pilgrims begann holprig, und ein Eröffnungsschlagmann „grillte“ den anderen sogar; 9/2 schien etwas unzureichend. Sie erholten sich dank einer soliden Leistung von Ankit (17). Nach 16 Overs bei 74/4 schienen die Pilgrims gut auf Kurs zu sein. Das war vor allem einer schönen Familienpartnerschaft zu verdanken: Matthew spielte zusammen mit Oscar, beide erzielten jeweils 23 Runs. Jay steuerte weitere spektakuläre 17 Runs aus nur 11 Bällen bei. Doch als Oscar bei 131/8 von Kabir nach einem Ball von Saad gefangen wurde, brachen die Pilgrims ein. Keiner der letzten drei Schlagmänner konnte auch nur einen einzigen Run erzielen, und die Gäste wurden für 137 Runs aus dem Spiel gekegelt – nur 9 Runs entfernt von ihrem Ziel. Nitesh, Rohit und Saad hatten jeweils 2 Wickets erzielt, Kabir 1; andereBälle hielten Rohit, Gurjit und Ashish S. hinter den Stumps sowie Nitesh, letzterer von seinen eigenen Bowling. Ashish J. verdient Anerkennung für zwei schnelle Run-outs.

Ja, insgesamt war es ein gutes Cricket-Spiel, vor allem da die Oberhand hin und her wechselte. Darüber hinaus war die Einstellung aller Spieler bewundernswert. Auf jeder Seite wurden ein paar Schlagmänner zurückgerufen, nachdem sie bereits ausgeschieden waren, und beide Mannschaften gaben jedem Spieler die Chance, zu bowlen. Elisabeth wurde für ein paar Overs als Feldersatzspielerin der All Stars begrüßt und verhinderte eine Boundary. Es gab unterhaltsame Live-Kommentare für die Zuschauer und durchweg eine fröhliche Atmosphäre.

Die Heimmannschaft sorgte für Sandwiches und die Gäste stellten ERDINGER-Produkte zur Verfügung. Die Spieler konnten 350 € für die Nachbarschaftshilfe Erding sammeln. Wie schade, daß nicht mehr Zuschauer da waren – um den Spaß zu genießen und zu den Spenden beizutragen. Vielleicht nächstes Jahr? Als die All Stars den Pokal in die Höhe reckten, wurde Nitesh zum „Man of the Match“ gekürt – eine knappe Entscheidung vor Rohit und Ashish S. Doch der Oscar ging an einen Pilgrim; bestimmt kann man sich denken, wer genug Eindruck hinterließ, um diese Auszeichnung zu verdienen.

And the Oscar goes to …

At last the Pilgrims were back in the Erding Stadium, right next to the autumn funfair. Popular music and the scent of roasted almonds and candyfloss wafted across the ground. The summer sun had soaked up the overnight rain; the field had become dry and blunt. Satya had arrived with planks and a carpet from Moosburg and set up a pitch. 11 Bavarian All Stars, mostly members of nearby BC Attaching, were ready to play. And Ms. Bauernfeind from Nachbarschaftshilfe Erding had supplied a sound system for live match commentary. An ideal setting for the 6th ERDINGER Alkoholfrei Bavaria Cup?What more could anyone have expected?

Well, maybe a complete team of 11 Pilgrims, all players appearing properly in club colours, and, above all, a slightly more dedicated performance by the visitors? Then, again, there were some fine efforts by individual players. The Pilgrims had been asked to field. Captain Keshav gave the new ball to the only rookie on his team, Matthew’s son Oscar. The young student from Berlin did not disappoint: With a wicket off his very first ball, a feat no Pilgrim has achieved before, he set the standard (4-1-26-1). Ankit took inspiration from this deed repeating it later (4-1-17-3), splendidly supported by the most economical Saradhi (5-0-11-3), who also held 2 catches, including an impressive single-handed pluck at cover, and Keshav (3-0-12-3), who held 1 catch. Another wicket was taken by Satya; further balls were caught by Murali, who had captained the Pilgrims on this ground in 2019, and Jay, who stood in to complete the islanders’ team.

At 69/6 the score looked rather good for the Pilgrims. Only 2All Stars had managed to get into double figures, captain and opener Rohit (17), and new arrival Gurjit (22), who even hoicked the precious pink ball irretrievably into a rain pipe of an adjoining building. But Ashish S. had other ideas and showed that his recent injury had left no traces; he hit 40 runs off 38 balls (including 3 x 6) and, with some valuable support by last man Nitesh (17 off 16), shifted the final score to 146 after 29.3 overs. Would this suffice on a ground where the long grass made scoring runs difficult?

The Pilgrims’ innings began with a shaky start and one opener even barbecuing the other; 9/2 looked somewhat insufficient. They recovered with a solid stance of Ankit (17). After 16 overs at 74/4 the Pilgrims appeared well on course. This was mainly owed to a lovely family partnership, Matthew batting together with Oscar, both of them top-scoring 23 runs each. Jay contributed another flamboyant 17 off only 11 balls. But once Oscar was caught by Kabir off Saad at 131/8, the Pilgrims crumbled. None of the last 3 batsmen could achieve a single run and the visitors were bowled out for 137, just 9 runs short of their target. Nitesh, Rohit and Saad had taken 2 wickets each, Kabir 1; other catches went to Rohit, Gurjit, Ashish S. behind the stumps and Nitesh off his own bowling. Ashish J. merits credit for 2 swift run-outs.

Yes, on the whole it was a good game of cricket, especially with the advantage meandering to and fro. What is more, the spirit of all the players was admirable. A couple of batsmen on each side were called back after having been given out, and both teams gave every player a chance to bowl. Elisabeth was welcomed as an All Stars fielding substitute for a couple of overs and saved a boundary. There was some entertaining live commentary for the spectators and a jolly atmosphere throughout.

The home side provided sandwiches and the visitors supplied ERDINGER products. The players were able to raise 350 € for Nachbarschaftshilfe Erding. What a shame there were not more spectators – to enjoy the fun and to contribute to the donations. Maybe next year? When the All Stars raised the Cup, Nitesh was awarded “man of the match” – a close call over Rohit and Ashish S. But the Oscar went to a Pilgrim;surely you can guess who impressed enough to merit this accolade.
