🌤 Ein Tag voller Kricket, Kameradschaft und Küstencharme

Unter der goldenen Sonne Devons und dem wachsamen Blick der Klippen und des Meeres trafen sich zwei begeisterte Teams – Heligoland Pilgrims CC und Further Friars CC – im spektakulären Valley of the Rocks auf dem malerischen Lynton and Lynmouth Platz zu einem Spiel, das sowohl wegen seines Crickets als auch wegen seiner Eigenheiten unvergeßlich bleibt. Further Friars gewann das One-Day-Declaration-Format mit 2 Wickets auf dem vorletzten Ball.

Bevor jedoch ein einziger Run erzielt wurde, begann das Spiel mit einer reizvollen Überraschung: Jess, Teamphotographin und Ehren-Eröffnerin des Tages, stand für die Pilgrims im ersten (nicht gewerteten) Over am Schlag, um ihren Geburtstag zu feiern, der genau auf den Spieltag fiel. Mit dem Schläger in der Hand und einem Lächeln im Gesicht setzte sie den Ton für einen Tag, an dem es mehr um Freude als um Zahlen gehen sollte.

🏆 Erstes Innings: HPCC erzielt starke 226-7

HPCC schlug zuerst und erzielte solide 226 für 7 in 38 Overs, woraufhin es das Innings für beendet erklärte. Das Innings waren geprägt von Ausdauer und Flair, wobei jeder Pilgrim mindestens ein Over beitrug. Cam erzielte die höchste Punktzahl und glänzte mit schnellen 60* aus 28 Bällen, darunter 8 Fours und 2 Sixes. Nachdem er in den Dreißigern für die Nummern 10 (Adrian) und 11 (Moritz) ausgewechselt worden war, kehrte er für die letzten Overs des Innings zurück an die Crease. Ankit und Nabeel schlugen beide gut und wurden abgezogen, um anderen eine Chance zu geben, aber nicht bevor sie jeweils 35 und 43 Punkte beigesteuert hatten. Die Bowler von Further Friars teilten sich die Beute, wobei Andrew 2 Wickets erzielte und Alan, George und Chris jeweils einen beitrugen.

🌀 Zweites Innings: Further Friars holen dramatischauf

Die Aufholjagd begann mit einem frühen Rückschlag: Es fielen ziemlich viele Wickets für nicht allzu viele Runs! Doch dann kam das stürmische Innings von Romesh, der mit majestätischen 112* aus 73 Bällen das Blatt wendete, unterstützt von Toby (32) und Chris (29). Es überrascht nicht, daß Romeshs spielentscheidender Schlag ihm den Titel „Spieler des Spiels” einbrachte, und er war noch am Crease, als die Further Friars auf dem vorletzten Ball des Tages die Gesamtpunktzahl erreichten. Gerade als das Spiel spannend wurde, führte ein freundschaftliches Mißverständnis zwischen den Kapitänen zu einer Neuverhandlung der Bedingungen bei 15 Overs im zweiten Innings. Was eigentlich ein 23-Over-Innings-Spiel werden sollte, wurde zu einem 30-Over-Thriller, mit 7 Bonus-Overs extra voller Cricket-Freude – oder Schmerz, je nach Sichtweise! Ankit setzte sein starkes Spiel fort und war mit 3/14 der beste Bowler des HPCC. Satya und Dev bowlten ebenfalls gut; alle anderen Pilgrims geben sich Mühe.

🎉 Höhepunkte & Heiterkeit

Der Veranstaltungsort selbst war ein unumstrittener Star: Der Lynton and Lynmouth CC, eingebettet zwischen Klippen und Küste im Valley of the Rocks, bot eine Kulisse, die Postkarten und Videos würdig war, obwohl kein Bild und kein Film das Erlebnis, dort zu spielen, ersetzen kann. Und es war ein absolut wunderschöner Tag.Das Spiel war gespickt mit Gelächter, malerischen Pausen und gutmütigen Scherzen. Die Fans der Friars hatten einen Tee von Weltklasse vorbereitet, darunter reichlich Scones, Marmelade und Sahne. Da wir in Devon waren, gab es natürlich die obligatorische Diskussion darüber, ob die Marmelade oder die Sahne oben drauf kommt, und nur einer von uns behauptete, sich daran zu erinnern zu können! Auf jeden Fall waren die Scones köstlich, unabhängig von der Anordnung von Marmelade und Sahne!

🏖 Schlußgedanken

Dies war nicht nur ein Cricket-Spiel – es war ein Fest des Sports, der Landschaft und der Spontaneität. Von Jess‘ Feier bis zur spontanen Verlängerung des Spiels war jeder Moment eine Erinnerung daran, daß Cricket am besten mit einem Lächeln, Sonnenschein, guten Freunden und einer Prise Unvorhergesehenem genossen wird. Das Spiel zeigte eine positive Herangehensweise des HPCC an das Feldspiel, abgesehen von gelegentlichen Fehlfängen und dem unorthodoxen Einsatz von Fußballfähigkeiten. Der Tag blieb malerisch und die Anstrengungen waren durchweg energiegeladen. Auf weitere Spiele wie dieses – bei denen die Spielstatistik eine Geschichte erzählt, aber das Lachen und die Erinnerungen eine andere.

Under the golden Devon sun and the watchful gaze of the cliffs and sea, two enthusiastic teams—Heligoland Pilgrims CC and Further Friars CC—met in the spectacular Valley of the Rocks at the picturesque Lynton and Lynmouth ground for a match that was as memorable for its cricket as it was for its quirks. Further Friars won the One Day declaration format by 2 wickets on the penultimate ball. Before a single run was scored, however, the match began with a delightful twist: Jess, team photographer and honorary opener for the day, faced the first (non-scored) over for the Pilgrims to celebrate her birthday occurring precisely on the day of play. With bat in hand and a grin on her face, she set the tone for a day that would be more about joy than just the numbers.

HPCC batted first, putting up a solid 226 for 7 in 38 overs and declaring at that point. The innings was a tapestry of resilience and flair with every Pilgrim contributing at least one over. Cam top-scored and dazzled with a late, rapid-fire 60* off 28 balls, including 8 fours and 2 sixes. After being retired in the thirties for the number 10 (Adrian) and number 11 (Moritz) to come into bat, he returned to the crease for the final overs of the innings. Ankit and Nabeel both batted well, and retired to give others a bat, but not before contributing 35 and 43 respectively. The bowlers from Further Friars shared the spoils, with Andrew taking 2 wickets and Alan, George and Chris chipping in with one each.

🌀 Second Innings: Further Friars Chase with Drama

The chase began with early calamity; quite a few wickets fell for not that many runs! But then came the storming innings of Romesh, who turned the tide with a majestic 112* off 73 balls, supported by Toby (32) and Chris (29). Unsurprisingly, Romesh’s game-defining knock earned him player of the match, and he was still at the crease when the Further Friars chased down the total on the second last ball of the day. Just as the match was heating up, a friendly misunderstanding between captains led to a renegotiation of terms at the 15-over mark of the second innings. What was meant to be a 23-over second innings chase turned into a 30-over thriller, adding 7 bonus overs of cricketing joy – or pain, depending on your viewpoint! Ankit continued his strong game, as the pick of the HPCC bowlers, taking 3/14. Satya and Dev also bowled well, all other Pilgrims tried hard.

🎉 Highlights & Hilarity

The venue itself was an undisputed star: Lynton and Lynmouth CC, nestled between cliffs and coast in the Valley of the Rocks, offered a backdrop worthy of postcards and videos, although no picture or film can replace the experience of playing there. And it was an absolutely beautiful day. The match was peppered with laughter, scenic breaks, and good-natured banter. A world-class tea was prepared by the Friars’ supporters, including copious quantities of scones, jam and cream. As we were in Devon, there was the requisite discussion of whether the jam or cream goes on top, and only one of us purported to remember! In any case, the scones were delicious, independent of the order of jam and cream!

🏖 Final Thoughts

This wasn’t just a cricket match—it was a celebration of sport, scenery, and spontaneity. From Jess’s ceremonial over to the impromptu extension of play, every moment was a reminder that cricket is best enjoyed with smiles, sunshine, good mates, and a touch of the unexpected. The match demonstrated a positive approach to fielding by HPCC, apart from the occasional dropped catch and the unorthodox use of footballing skills. The day remained scenic, and the effort energetic throughout. Here’s to more matches like this — where the scorecard tells one story, but the laughter and memories tell another.
